MYSTERY GRAY GRANITEWARE
USED FOR ? ? ?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
- Two medium-mottled gray graniteware three-sided items, possibly part of a larger set
- Overall, each measures approximately: 7-1/2" W X 4-1/2" D (viewed from the top), 6-1/2" high; each weighs approx. 1/2 pound
- The pieces are seamed on the "curved" side; both have 2 rusty "latches" (??) attached to an applied rectangular "bracket"
- The original use is unknown. Were a third piece present, the group would form a loose circle
- Perhaps the group would have been used as a rudimentary canning or burner-conserving cooking set, only a guess
- For similar shaped pieces (albeit with "handles"), please reference: Greguire, The Collector's Encyclopedia of Granite Ware:
Colors, Shapes and Values, 1990, pp. 288-289 and Greguire, The Collector's Encyclopedia of Granite Ware: Colors,
Shapes and Values, Book 2, 1993, Sec. 6, Row 1, #3, pp. 142-143
However, in the absence of a definitive sighting, the jury still remains out; comments are welcomed
- No manufacturer marks; the finer mottling suggests a vintage from the early 1900's (?)
- Definitely used condition with rust, dings, enamel loss etc. etc. Photos above show representative features and flaws
- View and pick-up in Naperville, Illinois
$ 15.00 / Set of 2
